List of equipment.
Elgato game capture hd ---> Elgato Site (I got mine on ebay)
viewHD SPDIF/Toslink Splitter 1x3 Support 5.1 VHD-TS1X3 ---> Amazon purchase Link
viewHD Digital to Analog Audio Decoder Support 5.1 VHD-ADAC ---> Amazon purchase Link
Computer.
3 Toslink cables. (I get all my cables at www.monoprice.com. Best prices and cables have never failed me)
Two HDMI cables.
3.5mm jack to Stereo RCA. (Elgato has a 3.5mm and a stereo rca output however I found that the sound quality was better using 3.5mm output).
How I have it hooked up:
HDMI Pathway:
Xbox -> Elgato -> Projector/tv
Toslink Pathway:
Xbox -> viewHD Toslink Splitter input -> output 1 -> digital input on back of reciever (Onkyo TX-SR606)
-> output 2 -> viewHD Digital-to-analog Decoder input
Analog Stereo Pathway:
viewHD Digital-to-analog Decoder -> output 3.5mm jack (cable 3.5mm to Stereo RCA) -> RCA inputs on Elgato A/V in adapter cord (comes with elgato) which plugs into Elgato.
USB cable from Elgato goes to PC. (comes with elgato)
If you setup the Elgato by itself you cannot play with 5.1 surround. The Elgato HDMI pass-through does not support the 5.1 signal and downgrades it to stereo. When I shopped for the Toslink splitter and Digital-to-analog decoder I had to be sure it supported the 5.1 surround. The devices that did not support 5.1 were only $5 while the ones that did were 5x more expensive. I assume this is why the elgato does not support 5.1 passthrough as it would make the device to expensive for the consumer. Instead of passing 5.1 audio through the HDMI you set your Xbox to use the digital toslink output for 5.1 audio. Use the viewHD devices to send analog audio signal to Elgato and 5.1 surround sound to reciever.
The Elgato is by no means the only way to record Xbox gameplay. The software that comes with it is excellent and it has never given me any problems.
